WHAT STLYE OF YOGA DO YOU OFFER AT YOGADORE?
There are many styles of yoga - at yogadore we stick to slow flow hatha-style yoga, a style typically associated with gentle postures, breathing and relaxation, where the emphasis is on quieting the mind, body and nervous system, rather than on having a 'work out'. The point is to execute various physical postures with a high level of awareness. The result can still be physically demanding, and when done within your own ability, naturally improves with regular practice.
DO YOU HAVE YOGA CLASSES FOR BEGINNERS ?
In general, classes at yogadore are small and intimate with lots of personal attention and interaction ... all ages and experience are easily accommodated.
However the Thu 10h00 class does focus on our seniors!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO YOGA?
Whatever you feel most comfortable in. We recommend something loose or stretchy so that it's easy to move.
During class we request that students practise with clean, bare feet or in socks. Shoes are left outside the practice room.

SHOULD I BRING MY OWN MAT?
Yes. We strongly encourage regular students to bring their own.
You must provide your own equipment and props: mat, towels (small), straps (an old dressing gown belt or even a tie is more than adequate!)
However, yogadore does provide foam blocks and balls (and blankets in winter!). Please provide for all your other needs and take away everything you bring with you.
Mats are easily purchased from Game, Dis-chem or Mr Price Sport where the prices tend to be the most competitive.

HOW DO I CHOOSE A MAT?
Selecting your mat is absolutely a personal choice and here are some pointers to think about. For us the considerations are: common usage; grip; durability; cleaning; price.
Common usage: thicker mats provide more comfort, but standing (in particular balance) poses are more difficult (even contraindicated) – stepping off the mat for these poses can accommodate this. If you carry your mat around a lot, consider the weight and size of it.
Grip: if a mat is too slippery, traction on hands and feet is lost – this traction assists for example a downward dog pose; textured mats provide most traction even if your hands get a little sweaty.
Durability: thicker mats last longer than thinner mats. That said, mat durability is also related to the material the mat is made from. PVC is a plastic-based material that is highly durable, easy to clean and offers excellent grip.
Cleaning: regular wipe downs are recommended particularly after a class in warm conditions; because we tend to roll mats immediately and store them like this, airing them occasionally is also a good idea. It is better to avoid detergents when giving a thorough clean as this can ‘eat’ the material, otherwise ensure that it is properly rinsed. You can use spray bottles (water with a teaspoon of white spirit vinegar in, and dry off with a towel) or cool wipes. You can even submerge the entire mat in a bath. The important thing is let a mat dry completely. Mats do get stained very easily – we have learnt to choose a colour that ‘hides’ stains.
Price: expensive is not necessarily better. In fact replacing a cheaper mat more often might provide a better experience.

I AM NOT A FLEXIBLE PERSON - CAN I DO YOGA?
Yoga is best done within the limits of your own capacity.
Flexibility is not essential to experience the benefits of the attention you give yourself when participating in a class; however developing flexibility is a result of regular practice and similarly the development of physical strength is a common outcome.

IS YOGA RELIGIOUS?
In modern western society, yoga practice is unrelated to any religion.
The sanskrit word for 'yoga' has the literal meaning of 'yoke', from the root ‘yuj’ meaning to join, unite or attach.
At its most simple, yoga is the combination of physical poses (asanas) with mindful breathing (pranayama).

I HAVE BACK PROBLEMS - IS YOGA AN OPTION?
Yes! Yoga is always worth exploring. It can be an excellent option to remedy many (but not all) physical complaints - and be careful to do a style of yoga that is remedial. Our personal experience and the experience of many of our students has been that the way we practise at yogadore has proved to be highly beneficial. Remember, it is essential to inform your teacher of all physical complaints before any class and to practise within your own capacity.
Rule number one: listen to your own body - if it feels good do it; if it doesn't, don't.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SPIRALS PERSONAL MASTERY WORKSHOPS?
The spirals Personal Mastery course consists of twelve workshops in all (the first two make up the foundation phase, springboard, while the rest make up Phase 2). It is a comprehensive, all-encompassing journey of self-exploration.
Each workshop has its own theme, for example: mastering your shadow, emotional intelligence (reprogramming), manifesting abundance and so on. and provides a wide variety of exercises which are mainly observation tools and techniques (many in the form of question and answer, many illuminating a different way of looking at things) to enable the all-important self-attention - you will do a fair amount of writing as this information is really for your eyes only.
The course is concerned with you revealing yourself to yourself without judgement, rather than to the other participants (although sharing is welcomed), there is no requirement for confrontation between participants and there is no pressure to have breakthroughs (although these somehow can't be avoided!)
The emphasis is on being gentle with yourself, and on using seemingly random and seemingly meaningless tasks to throw light on personal issues, repeated patterns of experience, life-long habits, traits, desires, fears, hopes, angers, resentments, joys ... over time the big picture becomes more and more obvious and meaningful - rather like working on a particular patch of a jigsaw puzzle that has no context until all the little patches are put together.
As the picture starts to emerge and make sense, the focus of the workshops moves into making effective change through activities such as vision boards, clutter clearing and goal setting.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS ONE OF THE WORKSHOPS?
If during the course of Phase 2 your group agrees to skip a week or so (school holidays/illness etc), this is easily accommodated and we pick up where we left off, the following week. If missing a workshop is completely unavoidable, handouts and worksheets are still provided and I am available to be contacted by phone or email. It is not essential to do the modules in consecutive weeks, but it is highly recommended that each module is completed.
WHAT IS SHADOW MASTERY?
The term 'shadow' was coined by Carl Jung in reference to the unconscious self - aspects of ourselves that are hidden or denied. Shadow mastery is a process of revealing these aspects of the self with a view to reintegrating them and using them positively.
